Waste District Helps Bring Sesame Street To Fort Wayne

Posted

Area families and students have a chance to see "Sesame Street Live" in Fort Wayne Dec. 3 to 6.

The Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District, WBTU radio, the Northeast Indiana Solid Waste Management District, AMOCO and Wilby's Gas and Goodies are sponsoring a coloring contest where one classroom and individual children will be able to win tickets to the show.

Oscar the Grouch, a Sesame Street character, has been educating children about recycling on television and in the live shows for many years. Locally, coloring sheets are available at the KCSWMD. About 100 tickets will be given away by WBTU.

In other news, local elementary schools are sponsoring a shoe recovery program. The four schools - Atwood, Milford, Syracuse and North Webster - will collect shoes now through Nov. 30. The shoes will be sorted and then distributed by M.H. Textiles in Detroit and by Double R. Investments in Huntington.

The schools will be paid about 20 cents for every pound of shoes collected. Old shoes take about 200 years to decompose in a landfill, but are in great demand throughout the United States and overseas.

For more information on shoe recycling or the "Sesame Street Live" coloring contest, call KCSWMD at 372-3087 or 877-288-4304.
