The final weekend of October showcased the strength, depth, and bright future of Warsaw cross country. Three current Tigers competed against Indiana's best at the IHSAA State Cross Country Championships, while six Warsaw graduates represented their universities at NCAA Division I conference championship meets across four major conferences.
From state qualifiers in Terre Haute to athletes competing in the Big Ten, Big East, Missouri Valley, and Horizon League Championships, Warsaw's distance-running tradition was on full display.
IHSAA State Meet Recap
After narrowly missing a team berth to the State Finals by just five points at the Manchester Regional, the Warsaw girls still sent two individual qualifiers to Indiana's biggest cross-country stage. Both happened to be sophomores.
Dani Rastrelli concluded a breakthrough season with a strong performance at the State Finals, placing 58th overall in 18:42.78 against the state's elite runners. Her state appearance came one week after a personal-best 18:40.77 at the Manchester Regional, where she secured an individual state berth and continued her emergence as one of Indiana's top young distance runners.
Fellow sophomore CeCe Scheetz-Holland completed her remarkable season by finishing 181st at State in 19:51.53. Her trip to Terre Haute capped one of the most dramatic improvements in the area this season. At the regional meet, Scheetz-Holland shattered her previous personal best by more than a minute, running 18:58.33 to earn the first State Finals qualification of her career.
On the boys' side, senior Jaxon Lehman earned an individual trip to the State Finals and put the finishing touches on an exceptional high school career. Competing against the state's best runners at LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, Lehman ran 16:30.86, finishing 157th overall in the championship race. His qualification to the State Finals was a testament to years of dedication, consistency, and leadership within the Warsaw program. As the lone Warsaw representative in the boys race, Lehman proudly carried the Tiger banner on Indiana's biggest stage.
Former Tigers Continue Success at the Division I Level
While Warsaw's current athletes were competing in Terre Haute, former Tigers were racing against some of the nation's top collegiate competition at NCAA conference championship meets. Former Warsaw standout Joey Rastrelli represented Indiana University at the highly competitive Big Ten Championships. Rastrelli finished 68th overall in 21:03.21 over 6,000 meters and was Indiana's sixth runner. The Hoosiers finished seventh as a team in one of the deepest conferences in collegiate cross country.
On the men's side, fellow Warsaw graduate Jackson Gackenheimer competed for Indiana University in the Big Ten Championship 8,000-meter race. Gackenheimer finished 120th overall in 25:41.21 and served as Indiana's ninth runner. The Hoosier men placed 11th in the conference team standings.
At the Big East Championships, Sammi Rastrelli helped DePaul University achieve one of the finest conference performances in school history. Rastrelli finished 60th overall in 22:24.80 over 6,000 meters and was DePaul's sixth runner. The Blue Demons earned a fifth-place team finish, the highest conference finish in program history, highlighting the continued rise of the DePaul women's program.
The Missouri Valley Conference Championships featured two former Warsaw standouts. Running for Valparaiso University, Tyler Swartz placed 52nd overall in 25:18.60 over 8,000 meters. Swartz was Valparaiso's third runner and helped them secure a ninth-place team finish.
At the same meet, Andrew Potter represented the University of Evansville. Potter finished 64th overall in 25:46.90, serving as the Purple Aces' third runner while helping Evansville to an 11th-place team finish. At the Horizon League Championships, Tyler Mimnaugh turned in one of the strongest performances among Warsaw alumni.
Competing for Wright State University, Mimnaugh ran 25:36.14 to finish 36th overall in the 8,000-meter championship race. He was Wright State's second runner and helped the Raiders earn an eighth-place team finish.
The Future Remains Bright
Championship weekend served as a reminder of the remarkable reach of Warsaw's cross-country program. Sophomores Dani Rastrelli and CeCe Scheetz-Holland gained valuable State Finals experience and will return next season as emerging leaders. Jaxon Lehman closed his high school career among Indiana's elite competitors.
Meanwhile, Warsaw alumni continue to thrive at the NCAA Division I level, representing programs across some of the nation's most competitive conferences.
From Terre Haute to championship courses across the Midwest, Warsaw runners once again demonstrated that the Tiger tradition extends beyond high school, creating a pipeline of athletes who continue to compete, improve, and succeed long after graduation.
