A 23-year-old Warsaw woman has been arrested for attempting to murder her infant son.

Rachel Hartman, of 1 EMS B 61 A Lane No. 3, Warsaw, was charged with the crime and booked into the Kosciusko County Jail.

According to a press release from the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, an officer was called to investigate a child abuse case Thursday.

Through the investigation, it was determined that Rachel Hartman's 6-month-old son's respirations were interrupted and the child stopped breathing.

Hartman reportedly told officers she used a sheet to smother her son, according to an incident report from the KCSD. Then once she realized what she had done, Hartman allegedly performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation to get the infant breathing again.

The infant was found in the hotel room at the Economy Inn, Warsaw, where Hartman allegedly was staying since Aug. 5.

After the infant was resuscitated, he was given to his biological father, Matthew Thomas, of Elkhart, by Hartman.

Hartman allegedly did not advise Thomas what had happened to the infant.

Hartman cooperated with the investigation and was booked into the jail.

The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department was assisted by the Division of Family and Child Services.
