Warsaw, Wawasee Advance To Tennis Sectional FinalWawasee and host Warsaw took very different paths to the Saturday’s boys tennis sectional championship, with the Tigers getting a 5-0 sweep of Tippecanoe Valley and the Warriors getting a dramatic 3-2 win over Columbia City in Thursday’s semifinals.
The drama for the Warriors and Eagles came in a three-set match at No. 3 singles. Wawasee’s Devon Kuhn won the first set 6-3 over Noah Finerock, then was shutout in the second set, 6-0. Kuhn came back to win the third set, and ultimately the match for Wawasee, by winning the third set 6-3.
At No. 1 singles, Zach Leeds took the momentum late in the first set, then rolled to a straight-set win 7-5, 6-0 over Columbia City’s Kendall Smith. The other Warrior win came at No. 1 doubles, where Granrt Brooks and Blaine Baut took a 6-2, 7-5 decision over the Eagles’ Evan Cearbaugh and Tanveer Singh.
Columbia City had wins at No. 2 singles, where Eli Jones beat Holden Babb 6-3, 6-1, and at No. 2 doubles, with Joshua Mner and Troy Krider downed Zeke Keim and Colin Rhoades 6-2, 7-5.
Warsaw vs. Tippecanoe Valley
The Tigers had little to no trouble in their match with the Vikings, winning each match in straight sets and losing no more than four games in any one match.
Caleb Williams beat Patyon Mills 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, with Trey Williams downing Dylan Neese 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Hayden Anderson took down Owen Kirchenstein 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
In doubles play, Will Boren and Michael Ray won 6-1, 6-1 over Russ Paxton and Ethan Hartman at the No. 1 position, and Cole Rhodes and Carter Schus took a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Cooper Walls and Annakin Pettit.
Wawasee and Warsaw will play for the sectional title at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Warsaw courts. The Tigers are going for a seventh consecutive sectional title. On Sept. 17 Warsaw won 3-2 over the Warriors in Northern Lakes Conference play.
