A Harrison Elementary sixth-grader will become an ambassador this summer as part of an international educational program.
Ashley Treesh, 12, of Warsaw, will join the People to People Student Ambassador Program in June as part of the "Yosemite Adventure."
Treesh will take part in hands-on experiences in wilderness and urban areas, traveling to Yosemite National Park and San Francisco and engaging in such activities as studying plants and animals in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, walking across the Golden Gate Bridge, examining tide pool life and exploring Chinatown.
She said she was nominated for the program and had to go through an interview before she was accepted.
"It'll be a fun experience and I'll get to meet new people," she said.
The Yosemite Adventure program was specifically designed for fifth- and sixth-graders. Students in middle school and high school travel overseas to visit and learn about other countries.
People to People was founded in 1956 by Dwight D. Eisenhower to provide opportunities for students to "explore domestic and foreign destinations, learning about the history, government, economy and culture of the areas they visit."
Treesh, the daughter of Denise Treesh of Warsaw, said she is attending monthly classes to prepare for the trip.
To help finance her trip, a benefit is being held March 19 at the Wagon Wheel Theatre with Elvis impersonators Quentin Flagg, of Argos, and Matt King, of Dearborn Heights, Mich. Tickets are $11 in advance and $16 on the day of the show. For more information on the show, call the Wagon Wheel at 267-8041 or 866-823-2618.
