As the temperatures begin to dip, signaling autumn's arrival, Warsaw Street Superintendent Lacey Francis is getting his department geared up for another season of collecting leaves.
"Until the time we bring out the leaf pickers, all leaves need to be bagged or boxed and placed at their trash site," he said.
The leaf pickers will not roll until the leaves start to fall in volume, probably mid-October, he said.
"When the leaf pickers are brought out, residents need to be reminded the leaves are to be raked to the curb line, but not into the street," Francis said. "When leaves are raked into the street, they tend to get caught in the storm drains and lines. This causes the roads to flood and makes for very slippery pavement when it rains.
"And, lastly, residents need to be reminded the alleys will be collected last with the leaf pickup," he said.
Francis said residents do not need to call the department to schedule a "special pickup" of yard waste and leaves. This material will be collected on the regularly scheduled trash collection day, unless it is too heavy for one man to collect himself.
Once the leaf pickup program starts, Francis said, residents can expect to see the leaf trucks in their neighborhood every five to six days.
