Warsaw Schools Fails To Make Adequate Yearly Progress In 2010

Posted
Warsaw Community Schools failed to make Adequate Yearly Progress in 2010.

According to a press release, in the previous AYP measurement, Warsaw Schools passed 21 of 25 categories and did not make AYP. The categories not made were in the language arts categories. These included free and reduced lunch, Hispanic, limited English and special education. In 2009-10, Warsaw Schools passed 24 of 25 categories, including all English and language arts categories. Special education students in the mathematics category missed making AYP by 1.8 percent. Because WCS did not pass all 25 categories, the school corporation did not make AYP in 2010.

Along with the school corporations, individual schools also must pass every category to pass AYP. The number of categories varies from school to school depending on the make-up of the school population.

This year, four WCS elementary schools made AYP. Making AYP were Eisenhower, Harrison, Lincoln and Washington elementary schools.

The challenge in making AYP increases in the 2010-11 school year, according to the press release, as the percentage of proficiency increases in English and language arts to 79.5, and the mathematics proficiency rate increase to 78.7.

AYP for Indiana school corporations and schools is determined by student performance and participation rates on Indiana Statewide Testing in English and language arts and mathematics. Also taken into account are student attendance rates for elementary and middle schools and graduation rates for high schools.

Since 2002, the federal No Child Left Behind Act has required public schools to meet annual performance targets for both the overall student population and for any demographic group within the school that includes 30 or more students. These groups include economic background, English proficiency, race and ethnicity and special education. Schools must meet all targets in every student group to make AYP.

There are a total of 25 categories in which school corporations must pass to make AYP. By 2014, 100 percent of the students must pass both the ISTEP English and language arts and ISTEP mathematics portion of the test. In 2009-10, the rate of proficiency for all Indiana students is 72.6 for English and language arts and 71.5 for mathematics.
