Warsaw Police Get Grant For Equipment

Warsaw's Police Department was one of several in Indiana to receive a grant from the U.S. Justice Department's Local Law Enforcement Block Grants Program.

The grant, for $15,977, will be used to help buy computer equipment for police cars, Warsaw Police Chief Craig Allebach said Friday.

"We'll use this grant to reduce the city's cost to match the grant for computers in squad cars," Allebach said.

The projected price for at least 15 computers that would be installed in the squad cars is approximately $140,000, he said.

Allebach predicts the department will get the grant money sometime in 1998. He said this is the third year WPD has received local law enforcement block grant monies, for a three-year total of approximately $46,000.

The grants program is administered by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, which supports state and local efforts through testing innovative approaches in preventing and controlling crime.

The latest grants were part of a round of grants for $712,269 for the entire state. Added to the $5.9 million Indiana received last year under the program, said 5th District Congressman Steve Buyer, Indiana has received more than $6.5 million for local law enforcement efforts.

"In smaller police departments, it is becoming more and more challenging to respond to the increasing demands placed upon law enforcement," Buyer said. "These grants will help rural law enforcement combat crime."
