Warsaw Parks Dept. May Add Campground Phone Lines

Posted

Steve Secrist, a camper at the city-operated Pike Lake Campground, appeared before the Warsaw parks and recreation board Tuesday asking that additional telephone lines be installed for Internet access.

"Everyone has access to the lines in the office," he said, "but when I get back from work, the office is closed."

He proposed three or four lines be made available, not necessarily lines to each camp site.

Park board president Bill Baldwin said it's something the board could look into.

Parks superintendent Jon Garber said there was one line now, 269-1439, that goes to the office and manager's camper. Campers use the office line to access the Internet for a limited time, to check e-mail occasionally.

Secrist also alluded to problems at the campground and chided the park board members for not visiting the area.

Larry Plummer Jr., parks director, said if there were any problems at the campgrounds he wanted to know about them.

"I talk to Ira (Werker, the manager) twice a week," he said. "If there are problems, I'm not aware of them."

In other business, the board:

• Heard from activities director Janelle Wilson regarding last weekend's Latin Celebration. She said several thousand people were present from 1 to 10 p.m. Saturday. There were 16 vendors and eight bands and a "low-rider" car show.

Wilson said the next parks event is a family fun day Oct. 10.

• Heard from Garber that the city traffic commission is recommending parking be allowed on Scott Street between Fort Wayne and Main streets, along McKinley Park.

Garber said he is very concerned about safety issues with children darting into the street between cars. The park, he said, is meant for neighborhood use and there is plenty of parking along Main and Fort Wayne streets.

A letter will be drafted to the city council recommending that section of Scott Street remain a no-parking zone.

• Approved a temporary sign be placed at Richardson-Dubois Park indicating the future Young Tiger Football field is under construction, as long as the sign meets city ordinance requirements.

Park board members are: Bill Baldwin, Cathy Folk and John Sadler. Toby Sumpter, Bob Richmond and city council representative Jeff Grose were absent.
