A Warsaw Police officer was taken to the hospital after being involved in a two-vehicle crash at Sheridan and Colfax streets at 4:06 p.m. Thursday. A gold 2006 Ford, driven by Carrie Graves, 60, Claypool, struck the side of a 2011 Ford police car driven by Sgt. Clay Layne, 42, Warsaw. Graves had a stop sign for southbound Colfax Street, while Layne had the right-of-way traveling eastbound on Sheridan, according to police. Both vehicles spun 90 degrees upon impact and came to rest on the southeast side of the intersection. The driver’s side air bags activated on the police car. Layne was not on an emergency run. He complained of pain to his side and back and was transported to Kosciusko Community Hospital by Multi-Township EMS. Graves told police that she was facing south on Colfax Street on the north side of Sheridan Street at the stop sign. She said she looked both east and west as well as south and did not see any oncoming traffic. Graves said that she started to cross Sheridan Street at which point her vehicle struck the police car. She stated that she did not see the police car until the impact. Graves refused medical treatment. Layne stated that he was traveling eastbound on Sheridan Street approaching Colfax Street at 30 mph. He stated that he observed Graves’ vehicle start to proceed through the intersection into his path of travel. Layne said that he attempted to avoid the collision but the front of Graves’ vehicle struck the driver’s side of his police car. The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department investigated the crash for Warsaw PD. WPD, KCSD, and M-TEMS were also assisted by Warsaw/Wayne Township Fire.
