Warsaw Native Wants To Be The Next Governor Of Michigan

A former Warsaw man plans to seek the Republican nomination for governor of Michigan in 2018.
Mirsnews.com on Thursday reported Dr. Jim Hines, “a Saginaw-based physician who has never run for public office, has officially thrown his name in the ring as a Republican gubernatorial candidate.”
Hines was born in Warsaw June 14, 1955, the eldest of four children. He graduated from Warsaw Community High School in 1973, according to his campaign website at www.hines4michigan.com
Michigan’s current governor is Rick Snyder. Others who may be possible GOP contenders for the 2018 Michigan gubernatorial campaign include Lt. Gov. Brian Calley, Attorney General Bill Schuette and Senate Majority Leader Arian Meekhof, according to mirsnews.com
The news website reported Hines hasn’t been very involved politically and state campaign finance records didn’t reveal much. Hines reported he’d be running as “a political outsider,” which he thinks gives him an advantage against other potential Republican contenders.
Hines’ goal is to visit all 83 Michigan counties.
Asked by MIRS why he plans to run for governor, Hines said he was inspired by another physician-turned-governor, former Indiana Gov. Otis Bowen, who visited the medical school Hines attended at one point.
Hines attended Grace College, Winona Lake, for a year before transferring to Indiana University in Bloomington, according to his campaign website. At I.U., he completed his bachelor’s degree in chemistry and biology. He was then accepted to the I.U. School of Medicine in Indianapolis, from which he graduated in 1980. This was followed by three years of family medicine residency in Fort Wayne.
Jim married his wife, Martha, in 1974, and they have seven sons and 10 grandchildren.
After serving as medical missionaries in the Central African Republic, they settled in Saginaw, Mich., in 1987 where Jim entered the OB-GYN residency program. After completing the program in 1991, he worked for a year, establishing the OB department at St. Luke’s Hospital in Saginaw.
The entire family returned to CAR for two years and then permanently relocated to Saginaw where Hines continued to practice OB-GYN.
He owns his own private practice, has gained expertise in pelvic reconstruction and robotic surgery and is certified in dexitometry and ultrasonography, according to his campaign website.
Hines currently is president of his private corporation, is chief of staff for Covenant HealthCare and president of the Christian Medical and Dental Associations.
