Warsaw Man's Nephews Fly Afghanistan MissionsAfter four months serving in Afghanistan, Air Force Captains Matthew and Gordon Olde will be returning to the United States soon.
Their uncle, Randy Piper, Warsaw, was more than happy to discuss his nephews and their contributions to the war effort Tuesday afternoon."I'm just really proud of them," he said.
Besides flying F-15s in Afghanistan, Piper said his nephews also have served in Iraq. They currently are in Spain.
Their mother, Kimra, is Randy's sister, and their father is a retired colonel in the Air Force. Both of their parents now live near Washington, D.C.
Rosemary and Ray Piper, Winona Lake, are the grandparents of Matthew and Gordon.
Matthew, 26, and Gordon, 28, have been in the Air Force "forever," Randy said.
"It's all they wanted to do. Both wanted to follow in their father's footsteps," said Randy.
Matthew and Gordon have visited the Warsaw area many times. Randy said they love the area and think it's a "best-kept secret." They can't wait to visit again.
"They can't wait to take a break, so to speak," said Randy. Both Oldes are part of the F-15 Strike Eagles and do a lot of "ground pounding," Randy said. They support Marine and Special Forces on the ground. Both are in the same squadron.
When they come for a visit, Randy said they'll have a delayed Christmas celebration here. Randy and his wife Kathy still have their Christmas tree up.
"I'm looking forward to it," Randy said.
Many Warsaw area residents helped send a large care package to the two Oldes men before Christmas.
Randy also noted that Gordon previously also did a flyover of the US Open in New York.
