A Warsaw man was arrested Tuesday evening after he reportedly drove over a curb and through the wall into Ace Hardware on Center Street. Officers suspected the man had been drinking. According to information provided by the Warsaw Police Department, Warsaw officers responded to a single-vehicle crash around 3:45 p.m. at Ace Hardware, 1701 E. Center St., Warsaw. The driver, John Mayer, 65, North Parker Street, Warsaw, told police he accidentally accelerated when he meant to brake, hopping a curb and driving his front bumper into the store front. During the investigation, officers observed signs of intoxication and after being medically cleared, Mayer allegedly refused certified chemical testing for intoxication so a search warrant was issued for a blood draw. Mayer was transported to Kosciusko Community Hospital for the test, and results are pending. Mayer was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail on a preliminary charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated – refusal to submit to a chemical and breath test, and held on a $550 bond. There were no injuries reported as a result of the accident and estimated damage is $20,000.
