Police are investigating an accident that occurred Jan. 1 and left a Warsaw man comatose until recently.
David J. Jackson, 29, of East Market Street, either fell from or was pushed from a moving vehicle or was struck by the car, according to a Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department report.
Jackson, who remains hospitalized, was comatose until Thursday and the sheriff's department was not made aware of the matter until Saturday. A family member reportedly contacted a Warsaw police officer, who forwarded the information to the sheriff's department when it was learned that the accident occurred in the Etna Green area.
Police said that the vehicle Jackson was in or struck by was allegedly driven by Jackson's girlfriend, Rebecca Waddle, 23, of the same address. The police report noted that Waddle refused to talk with authorities on the advice of her attorney.
The two apparently were involved in an altercation prior to the incident. After Jackson was injured, Waddle reportedly took him home and, after an unknown amount of time, took him to Kosciusko Community Hospital due to the severity of his injuries. He was later transferred to Parkview Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne, where officials this morning said he was in fair condition.
Although he has awakened from the coma, Jackson has a tube in his throat and can't speak, so police haven't learned from him what led to his injuries.
The matter remains under investigation.
