Warsaw Library Proposes 2001 Budget Of $1.6 Million

Posted

The total estimated budget of Warsaw Community Public Library for 2001 is $1,678,245.

This is 6 percent higher than the estimated 2000 budget. However, 1 percent of the budget is being appropriated to next year toward new computers.

The library board Monday approved the estimated budget, a notice to taxpayers of budget estimates and tax levies and a resolution to reduce the current operating budget.

The public hearing will be Aug. 29 at 4 p.m. The 2001 budget will be adopted Sept. 11 at 4 p.m. and the final budget hearing with the Indiana State Board of Tax Commissioners will be Sept. 26 at 2 p.m. at the courthouse.

The resolution to reduce the current operating budget is for the purpose of the new computers. Money that was not needed this year will be appropriated for next year.

Library director Ann Zydek said there is a need to upgrade the computer system, especially the card catalog. Rough cost estimate is about $200,000. Zydek is hoping to have enough money for this by 2002.

Zydek said that approximately 20 percent of the budget goes toward the collection for the public.

In other business:

• The limited use/limited application elevator should arrive by end of September. Zydek hopes to have the elevator installed and the project done by mid-October.

• Zydek reported that the summer reading program was a success. The theme was international and the grand finale for the event featured the Wellspring Fiddlers of Roanoke, who performed July 27.

The summer reading program wasn't quite as successful as last year, but Zydek was pleased with the results. Registration totaled 944, with 176 adults, 110 young adults and 658 children.

• Zydek also said Aug. 31 will be community service librarian Virginia Colburn's last day. She is moving to Tennessee.

• The library will be closed Sept. 22 due to a staff in-service program.

The board of trustees includes: library director Ann Zydek, assistant library director Joni Brookins, vice president Larry Chamberlain, Ruth Jones, Joel Curry, John Yingling, Irv Lindemuth, Caroline Nye, Mark Morrison, business manager Renee Sweeny, public relations assistant JoAnne Byers, facilities manager Rick Ellsworth and administrative technical assistant Susan Stafford.
