Warsaw Fire Department members attended The Platters and The Coasters concert at the Ramada Wagon Wheel Theatre Saturday.
The show was just a side benefit to a more serious subject as the men answered questions about the Sept. 11 tragedies in New York City and Washington, D.C.
They also spoke to the public about their job and explained some of their procedures and responsibilities.
Invited by the Wagon Wheel management, the firefighters served to both comfort and legitimize the collection of donations for the New York Firefighters 9-11 Disaster Relief Fund. One hundred percent of the money will go to family members who survive firefighters and emergency medical personnel who died during the attack.
According to Warsaw fire marshal Mike Wilson, the Ramada will forward donations to Firehouse.com, a Web site that supports Firehouse Magazine and Firehouse Expos and is working with the International Association of Firefighters.
"We access Firehouse.com daily as a source of information," Wilson said. "People also can send money directly."
Local firefighters also will be available Saturday at the WWT Barry Boggus concert.
Donations to this fund are tax-deductible and can be given on-line at www.firehouse.com The mailing address is: New York Firefighters 9-11 Disaster Relief Fund, 9658 Baltimore Ave., Suite 350, College Park, MD 20740.
There are numerous individuals and groups soliciting funds to help the victims of the unexpected attack. The easiest way to ensure monies are going to the right place is to contact local long-established agencies.
The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department and Warsaw Police Department are not collecting money, according to Kosciusko County Sheriff Aaron Rovenstine, and there are no plans to do so.
No one is authorized to solicit funds in the name of either department, Rovenstine said.
Also, anyone asking for money for the Police Protection Fund on behalf of either department is probably not legitimate, according to Warsaw Police Chief Steve Foster.
