Warsaw FFA Dominates At State Dairy Foods Contest

Posted
Saturday was a day to remember for the Warsaw FFA Chapter.

The Warsaw FFA Dairy Foods team traveled to Purdue University for State Dairy Foods Judging Contest, and came home victorious. There were 11 Warsaw FFA members that participated in contests, making up two teams of four and one team of three. The Warsaw FFA Dairy Foods Judging team is coached by advisor Lynnette Markley.

At contest judgers must evaluate several aspects of dairy foods. Judgers begin the morning by taking a written test that requires them to know about dairy production and marketing. They then move on to problem-solving non-dairy products versus real dairy products, evaluating milker units, California Mastitis Testing, cheese identifications and recognizing milk defects. After all evaluations have taken place, scores are totaled and winners are announced.

The top results were full of Warsaw names. Top individuals placing were: Kelsey Sponseller, 10th; Maryssa Hawley, 9th; Kyle Quick, 6th; and sweeping the top three spots were Alison Turley, 3rd; Brooklynne Slabaugh, 2nd; and Gianna Hartman, 1st. Warsaw dominated the individual scores having six individuals in the top 10 out of 183 total participants in contest.

Warsaw also had two placing teams. Warsaw Team Blue, consisting of Kyle Quick, Melissa Howard and Maryssa Hawley, placed sixth out of 48 teams; and Warsaw Team Gold, consisting of Gianna Hartman, Brooklynne Slabaugh, Alison Turley, and Carrie Hawley, placed first.

The Gold Team now will advance to the National Dairy Foods Judging Contest. They will represent Indiana at the national contest, which will be held in Indianapolis during National FFA Convention this coming fall.
