Warsaw Chooses Contractors For Treatment Plant

Posted

Two companies will be responsible for construction of Warsaw's second wastewater treatment plant: Indiana Construction Corp. and Corporate Construction Inc.

The two firms submitted the low bid as a joint venture to the Warsaw Board of Works Feb. 22.

Following recommendations by Jones & Henry Engineers Ltd., board members Jerry Patterson and Charlie Smith awarded the contract Friday.

The two companies presented the lowest bid of $10,592,150 followed by that of Bowen Engineering Corp., $11,418,000; and Reynolds Construction, $11,758,000.

In January, sewage customers began paying increased rates to help cover bond issues for the plant and a collection system.

Cost for the treatment plant is estimated at $10.27 million while cost for the collection system is estimated at $6.7 million.

The new plant is expected to have the same capacity, 3.9 million gallons a day, as the current facility in Boggs Industrial Park.

Initially, the plant, located south of U.S. 30 near the Tippecanoe River, will take in 1.8 million gallons per day, while the "old" plant handles 1.5 million gallons.

City planner Jeff Noffsinger asked that the bid by W.J. Carey for work on the Lake City Greenway be rejected. Noffsinger said the bid exceeded the trail budget and there were problems with specifications.

He did not know when the work would be rebid. The board approved this request.

In other business the board:

• Approved a $1,700 payment to Lake City Bank as trust manager for the sewage treatment plant construction account.

• Approved a Sprint Centurion service agreement for telephone service in most departments.

• Approved travel requests as submitted by Kip Shuter, Steve Adang, Steve Rockey an Jeff Noffsinger.

• Approved rehires and new hires of Brody Shively, Columbia City; Brian Becknell, Warsaw; Adam Mignery, Warsaw; Ira Werker, Syracuse; and Alyssa Schmucker, North Webster.

Mayor Ernie Wiggins was absent from the meeting.
