Warsaw Boys Win NLC CC Outright, Girls Share TitleDUNLAP — Warsaw boys are 2019 Northern Lakes Conference cross country outright champions and Tiger girls are co-champions.

By going 7-0 in NLC meets and winning the conference meet Saturday at Ox Bow County Park, the Jim Mills-coached WCHS boys reigned over the eight-team field.

The NLC meet saw Warsaw (51) and Goshen (62) take the top two spots and that’s how the teams finished in the overall standings.

Warsaw runners were Jacob Kissling (fifth in 16:27.39), Sam Lechlitner (seventh in 16:29.92), Tanner Stiver (eighth in 16:33.86), Fernando Niebbia (14th in 17:12.28), Austin Fleming (17th in 17:16.57), Luke Nier (22nd in 17:24.89 and Harrison Phipps (29th in 17:30.07).

“That’s the way we’ve been running all year,” said Mills of the Tigers’ pack. “We do not have a stud runner like Zeb (Hernandez) and some of the guys in the past. Our seventh guy finished ahead of Goshen’s fifth runner.

“If we’re going to be successful and get out of New Prairie (Semistate), which is our goal, we’ve got to keep making that gap smaller and smaller and they’ve been doing it.”

Kissling has been the one setting the pace throughout the season.

“Everybody’s been running off of him,” said Mills. “He’s a workman. He’s just a blue collar runner. But he’s dragging six other guys right along with him.

“I’ve been shocked all year.”

Next up for Warsaw teams is the Culver Academies Sectional on Saturday, where they will try to qualify for the Culver Academies Regional on Oct. 19.

Trailing the Tigers and RedHawks Saturday were Northridge (102), Plymouth (106), Elkhart Memorial (106), NorthWood (119), Concord (148) and Wawasee (195).

Karlson Hand (13th in 17:09.88), Michael Hameer (30th in 17:36.17), Jace Alexander (46th in 18:17.82), Camden Powell (52nd in 18:44.37), Trevor Smith (54th in 19:08.94), Josiah Boyer (55th in 19:10.73) and Thomas Conley (56th in 19:51.22) represented the Warriors.

Goshen’s Drew Hogan (16:06.28) won the boys race.

Warsaw girls tied with Northridge for conference honors. The Raiders went 7-0 in NLC duals.

In the conference meet, Warsaw (35 points) and Northridge (35) went 1-2.

Leading the way for the Tigers were Wini Barnett (second in 18:54.81), Ava Knight (fifth in 19:53.69), Amanda Lusinde (eighth in 20:18.41) and Adree Beckham (ninth in 20:24.05).

In addition, there was Erika Bugg (11th in 20:38.89, (Macelyn Maruccilli (15th in 20:57.76) and Mikayla Mimmaugh (28th in 21:53.29).

Rounding out the girls team standings were Goshen (111), Elkhart Memorial (118), NorthWood (129), Concord (138), Wawasee (165) and Plymouth (176).

Wawasee girls runners were Emma Ebright (seventh in 21;18.18), Cammy Kryder (34th in 22:08.16), Ella Beezley (36th in 22:11.01), Bailey Mayhew (38th in 22:23.20), Lily Tyler (40th in 22:26.13), Mariah Hurst (41st in 22:27.77) and Autumn Turner (45th in 23:18.35).

“It’s always interested to come to this meet and see the intensity ratchet up,” said Wawasee girls coach Doug Slabaugh. “Today, you throw in the really nice cool temps and it’s going intensify the race.

“We came out today and we competed. It was good to that.”

Ebright, who has been nursing injuries, was back in the Warriors lineup for the first time in about three weeks.

“From here on out, we’ve got to be zeroed in, focused and hungry,” said Slabaugh, who will bring his team back to Ox Bow Saturday, Oct. 12 for the Elkhart Sectional (the Elkhart Regional is on the same course on Oct. 19). “We’re just trying to (rather than shooting for specific times). From here, you’ve got to be in good position to advance.”

Northridge’s Haylee Hile (18:43.67) won the girls race.

In NLC junior varsity races, Warsaw’s Sam Slough (17:41.23) and Regan Brouwer (20:52.14) were winners.
