Warsaw BOW Awards Recycling Contract To Waste Management

Waste Management was the only bidder for the city's recycling contract, which was approved Friday by the Warsaw Board of Works.

The 18-month contract begins July 1 and ends Dec. 31, 2007. Costs are $4.85 per unit, per month, based on 2,000 units or households. The city's cost for the curbside recycling collection is $174,600.

The company will pick up recyclable materials such as newspapers, magazines, slick ad paper, fiber board, cardboard, catalogs, telephone books, aluminum cans, metal cans, No. 1 and No. 2 plastics and clear, brown and amber glass.

The board also:

• Approved $1,126 in Ramada Plaza hotel accommodations after various concerts as requested by the parks department.

• Approved a $5,000 payment for Kosciusko Development Inc. services in 2006, as approved by the city council.

• Approved advertisement for sale of a 1986 Ford semi-cab tractor as requested by the street department.

• Approved a Pitney Bowes postage meter lease contract for $175 per month for 24 months as requested by the sewage collection office.

• Opened two bids for the Fairlane Drive sanitary sewer project. Bidders and prices are: Everest LLC, $159,250, and Beer and Slabaugh, $211,473.

• Rejected a bid received for concrete as it was $11,000 more than projected costs, as requested by the parks department. The concrete would have been used to make a pad at the skate park.

Parks Activities Director Janelle Wilson said the area may be scaled down to be more in line with costs.

• Reviewed a communication from Plews Shadley Racher and Brawn, attorneys at law, they are reducing their per-hour rate to $125 per hour.

• Approved part time or seasonal employees: Adam Gardner, Mark Sudhoff, Steve Lowrance, Jacob Revere, Adam Brown, Jesse Felger, David Blessing and Lucas Gillis, parks department; Ryan Walenga and Jason Lenon, police department; and Todd Braddock, street department. New full-time employees are Jeremy Williams, fire department, and Andrew LeCount, street department.

• Travel requests were approved for Brian Roberts and Brad Kellar of the police department; Ernie Wiggins to attend a mayors' conference; and clerk's office employees Elaine Call, Milissa Griffith, Connie Volkert, Kim Arnold and Glenda Moser to attend State Board of Accounts classes.

Board of Works members are Ernie Wiggins, Jerry Patterson and Charlie Smith.
