Churches or other organizations who want to participate in "Back to Bethlehem" this year still have time to contact the Kosciusko County fair board, a representative of the board said Friday.
The second annual celebration is scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 14 and 15 at the fairgrounds.
"Back to Bethlehem" features live scenes of the biblical Christmas story. Viewers can drive through the display, which is presented at no cost to the public for admission (though free-will donations will be accepted).
Last year's nativity scene featured eight scenes that were done by community churches and other organizations. One of the scenes, the Angel Choir, was composed of representatives of several church choirs.
More than 3,000 people toured the live nativity display last year at the fairgrounds.
Also last year fair board members and members of the county's riding club performed as Roman soldiers and roamed the fairgrounds during display times to add authenticity.
Last year's scenes were: Mary being visited by the angel Gabriel, the Roman soldiers, Mary and Joseph traveling to Bethlehem, the crowded inn, the angel visiting the shepherds, the choir of angels, the Nativity, and wise men bearing gifts.
Fair board spokeswoman Becky Thomas said so far this year seven churches are signed up for "Back to Bethlehem." She said more volunteers are needed for the live scenes and to help prepare for the event; to serve hot drinks and cookies to the workers; to perform as carolers, soldiers and beggars; and to pass out candy canes and help keep traffic moving.
Thomas said four or five scenes are already in place, but more organizations are needed to complete the display.
Anyone interested in working on "Back to Bethlehem" should contact Thomas at the fair office at 269-1823 before Dec. 1, though sign-ups will be taken after that time.
