Volunteers, Dogs Alike Benefit From Walks At AWL

Volunteers, Dogs Alike Benefit From Walks At AWLFor those with a love of animals and a desire to exercise, the Animal Welfare League may be the place to go.

The facility is looking for volunteers to take dogs on a walk every day of the week.

Animal Welfare League Director Darla McCammon said it's a great opportunity for families to come in and see whether they are ready to adopt or not.

But it's a great way to exercise even if a person isn't currently interested in adopting.

"In fact we have one gentleman come out who is training for a marathon," said McMammon. "And he comes out and runs with the dogs."

McMammon said it provides the dual purpose of giving dogs exercise and allowing more people exposure to shelter dogs.

"It's really good for the dogs," said McMammon. "They're couped up in the cages most of the day. This allows them to go out and smell the flowers and sniff the air."

Anyone interested in walking dogs can call the AWL's volunteer coordinator, Trudy Palenske, at 574-267-3008.

For those under 15, a parent must be present to walk the dogs.

The AWL is at 3489 E. CR 100S.

The AWL is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday.
