Victim Of Winona Lake Boating Accident Identified

Posted
The name of the Warsaw man who died after a boating accident on Winona Lake early Thursday has been released.

The body of Craig W. Norrell, 50, of Country Club Lane, Warsaw, was found on shore around 9 a.m. Thursday about 100 yards west of the boat ramp at the Kosciusko County fairgrounds.

Police believe Norrell's boat capsized out in the lake and Norrell was able to reach shore, but he was overcome by water, wind and cold.

Norrell's wife, Brenda Colonius, reported him missing around 4:17 a.m. Thursday, and police and conservation officers began searching for Norrell around 7:30 a.m.

Norrell had taken his small fishing boat out on the water sometime after 9 p.m. Wednesday, and when Colonius discovered he had not returned at 4 a.m., she contacted police.

Norrell's overturned boat was found near a point about a quarter of a mile east of the boat ramp at the fairgrounds.

Shortly after the boat was found, Norrell's body was found along the shoreline by a fairgrounds maintenance worker.

Although life jackets were found in the boat, Norrell was not wearing one when his body was found.

Norrell was an experienced, avid boater and a night owl, and it was not unusual for him to take late-night trips on the lake, rain or shine. He was dressed for the elements, wearing boots, winter overalls, a heavy coat and other layers.

Norrell was employed with the Times-Union as the newspaper's technical supervisor since 1991. Before that, he installed and programmed computers and networks for small businesses. His mother, Lane Williams Hartle, is the publisher.

An autopsy will be conducted today to determine the cause of death. The incident remains under investigation.
