The City of Warsaw is only inviting veteran Deer Task Force archers to participate in the 2014 reduction effort due to the large number of participants the last several years. New applicants will not be accepted into the program for this year. Veteran task force archers are defined as being “archers who have successfully participated in the reduction effort for a minimum of one year since the inception of the program.” “We have been able to maintain a core group of committed archers in our program the past several years. We believe this group of veteran Deer Task Force archers is large enough, they know and follow our strict guidelines, and they have a proven track record of safely taking deer in our declared reduction zones,” said Jeff Grose, task force chair. “Adding new members that qualify each August into our program has been very positive, but new members require more training and oversight which puts an increased burden on our dedicated volunteers and the administrative team at the WPD,” he also said. The task force will evaluate the impact this “only veterans may apply” policy has on the program after the 2014 reduction effort. Completed task force applications must be submitted to the Warsaw Police Department by 3 p.m. Aug. 23. This year’s mandatory deer task force training sessions are Aug. 16 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. or Aug. 21 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at WPD. Interested archers will be required to complete a proficiency test, learn about the rules and regulations for the reduction effort and public safety. Archers will be notified by phone before Sept. 15, if selected into the program. The task force will present its proposal for nuisance and reduction efforts in late August or early September. Information, forms and applications for veteran task force archers about the deer reduction program for 2014 may be obtained on the city’s website at warsaw.in.gov
