MENTONE - The Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. Board of Trustees recognized high school junior Sheena Reed Monday.

Reed was one of 150 students from Indiana who participated in Sen. Evan Bayh's Indiana Service Leaders Summit. To be a part of the select group, Reed had to write an essay, be nominated and send in an application. She attended the summit in Indianapolis approximately three weeks ago.

She told the board the participating students got to meet each other first and then heard Bayh speak. He also answered some questions. The group took a photo with the senator.

After the picture, the students created more than 1,000 care packages for the troops in Iraq, had lunch and then planted 127 trees.

"It was so fun," Reed said. "I want to do it next year."

In other business, the school board:

• Approved a facility use contract between Beaver Dam Preschool and the TVSC. The agreement will let the preschool use a single classroom at Akron Elementary School for preschool classes.

• Approved Chad Andrews as the head track coach at TVHS; Brad Miller, eighth-grade boys basketball assistant coach, Tippecanoe Valley Middle School; Matt Springer, ninth-grade basketball coach, TVHS; and B.J. Walls, head softball coach, TVHS.

• Heard the TVSC board has been named an outstanding board for the third year in a row by the Indiana Association of School Boards.

• Announced their next three regular school board meetings are Nov. 8, Dec. 13 and Jan. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mentone Elementary School public meeting room.

TVSC board members are David E. O'Brien, Bryan D. Murphy, Rod Eaton, Hal D. Hoffman and Mark Wise. Superintendent is Daniel Kramer.
