Two Injured in Nappanee Horse-Car Accident

Posted
NAPPANEE – Two people were injured after a horse pulling a buggy pulled into oncoming traffic in rural Nappanee Sunday night.

Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Dept. deputies and medics were called just before 9:30 p.m. Sunday to the intersection of CRs 1350N and 500E, where a horse was downed in the roadway, the buggy it was pulling dislodged, and a vehicle crashed just off the 1350 shoulder.

According to a crash report, a horse-drawn buggy, operated by 75-year-old Everett Stutzman, of 6180 W. CR 1300N, Nappanee, was southbound on 500W when he came to the stop sign at the intersection with 1350N. There, Stutzman said, he stopped, then commanded the horse to pull out.

Stutzman said he did not see an oncoming green 1999 Chevrolet driven by Rebecca D. Bush, of Bremen, coming from the east. The vehicle struck the horse.

A witness told investigators that Bush tried to swerve away from the horse, but Bush said she was unable to, the report said.

The sheriff’s department could not comment on whether the horse survived the collision.

Bush’s passenger - 13-year-old Allison Tresh of Bremen - complained of head pain and was taken to Bremen Hospital for examination.

Stutzman complained of pain in his entire body, and was checked by medics.
