BOURBON - Summer swimming lessons through Triton Schools will be more expensive this year than in previous years.
The Triton School Board voted Monday to raise the cost of the class from $10 to $30. Superintendent Ted Chittum told the board the rise in cost is due to a change in state policy.
Swimming lessons used to be considered a summer school class and the school system was reimbursed for the cost of supervisors and transportation. However, Chittum said that is no longer the case. Chittum said 47 families are interested in the program this year and the school system must provide one supervisor for every six children in the program.
Chittum said the fee increase will not make up all of the extra cost passed on to the school corporation, but he thinks it is important to offer the program. Several board members agreed.
"I think it's a good program and we still should offer it," said board member Steve Blackford. "Swimming is something you learn for life."
Triton Junior/Senior High School Guidance Director Hugh Rettinger reported to the board on a recent tour Triton teachers took of a Warsaw apprenticeship center. Rettinger said the center and other programs like it provide a good avenue for students not interested in earning a college degree to learn a skilled trade in which they can make a living.
"By letting teachers see this, hopefully they can begin to point students toward it; students who might not want to pursue a college degree," Rettinger said.
Rettinger also told the board that Career Day will be held for the high school students at TJSHS Wednesday. Forty-two speakers from area businesses will be on hand to share their expertise with the students.
