Five bands vied for the $500 first-place prize Thursday night during the Warsaw Community High School 2012 Battle of the Bands at the Performing Arts Center.
By playing music from video games, including a medley of “Zelda” songs, the three-member group Tri-Force won the cash prize. Members include Nash Klinefelter, Taylor Rivich and Michael Blair.
The audience voted for the best band by putting their ticket into the box of the group they thought should win.
Blair also was selected as the “best instrumentalist” of the night and received an additional $50 cash prize. The award was chosen by John Finken, member of local bands CODA and Moxie.
Tri-Force won with 46 votes, and Cardboard Cosmonauts took second with 39 votes. Second place received $200.
Cardboard Cosmonauts performed covers of songs by Radiohead and David Bowie, with a little Vanilla Ice thrown in. Members of the five-person group include Nate Haller, Alex Deeter, Danny Coppes, Nathan Kolbe and Spenser Slaybaugh.
The other three bands that competed for the cash prizes were A Show of Hands, Cops! After Josh’s and Iltia (I Lived Through It All). While A Show of Hands and Cops! After Josh’s played rock, Iltia performed heavy metal.
Most of the bands during the night performed some of their original music.
The band Static Vortex performed as the opening act to the Battle of the Bands, with the WCHS Jazz Band performing while votes were tallied.
All proceeds from the Battle of the Bands will benefit the Warsaw Band Boosters.
