Long lines at the county treasurer's office are a common sight after Kosciusko County property owners receive their tax bills.
This year, county treasurer Kent Adams is hoping to expedite the spring tax payment process as well as make it more efficient with a few changes.
The first change, Adams said, is that he will be in the county courthouse hallway outside his office to provide direction and answer questions.
"We want to confirm taxpayers have the appropriate documents in hand for an orderly process," said Adams. "If someone has to go to the auditor's or assessor's office for whatever reason, we don't want to have them mistakenly waiting in line for a half-hour and then get to the counter only to find this out."
A drop box also will be out in the hall for tax payments for those who do not want to wait in line. The payment can be receipted and the taxpayer can return later to pick up their stamped paid copy, or they can include a self-addressed stamped envelope with their payment. Their paid copy will be sent back to them by mail as is done with other tax payments received by mail during the payment period.
Inside the treasurer's office, there will be four counter stations to receive tax payments. Chief deputy Cindy Nolton and deputy Karen Thomas will be available to address questions and assist.
Adams stressed that telephones will be answered during the tax payment period. The office personnel will not be able to spend long periods of time with any individual caller due to the number of calls received, but taxpayers' information and questions will be taken. After the close of office hours, the calls will be returned.
Approximately 90,000 tax bills will be mailed by April 25. The spring payment deadline is May 10.
