Trauma, Not Overdose, In Case Of 2-Year-Old

Posted
CLAYPOOL - The Times-Union incorrectly reported that a 2-year-old suffered an overdose Jan. 30.

While Cameron Booher, now 3, did test positive for opiates, he did not test positive for methadone and oxycodone as previously reported. His father, Adam Booher, however, did test positive for both of those drugs.

The family told police that the child was not taking any medications besides a prescription of asthma and other over-the-counter drugs.Doctors at Riley Hospital for Children told detectives with the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department that the child's injury was that of a "shaken baby-type injury but in a much older child," according to Dr. Roberta Hibbard at Riley.

The child was unresponsive in the morning of Jan. 30, and after attempts to wake him up, his grandmother, Kathy Haywood, reported noticing what she believed to be burns on his neck and right shoulder.

After applying some salves to the child, the child was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital rather than by ambulance, which kept the incident off county dispatch call logs.

Once at KCH, the child was airlifted to Riley after doctors at KCH believed he suffered a head trauma.

According to the report at KCSD, the family didn't report any accident or fall by the child that could explain the injuries.

Once at Riley, doctors noted that the child suffered "damage to the neck and head area (causing) substantial internal bleeding into the muscle tissue and brain."

Doctors stated they believed the child's injuries came from one traumatic incident rather than several, and that strokes he may have suffered would explain the red marks on his neck and shoulder.

When police arrived at Booher's residence to question him, they found several family members cleaning the residence. One of Booher's relatives told police they were cleaning because Adam was expecting a social worker at the house.

Booher's other two children, who were at the home when Cameron suffered his injuries, are in the custody of their grandmother.

Charges of neglect of a dependent child causing serious bodily injury, as well as battery of a person under the age of 14 by a person over the age of 18, have been filed against the child's father.

As of this morning, Adam Booher had still not been arrested.

Both charges are Class B felonies.

The child is currently at the rehabilitation center at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis.
