Last year more than 1,500 Kosciusko County children had new toys to open at Christmas because old toys were recycled and repurchased.
Proceeds from Combined Community Services' annual toy consignment sale is used to buy new toys and given away to local underprivileged children, according to organizer Ami Pitt.
The sale is scheduled for Dec. 10, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Dec. 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Home and Family Arts Building on the Kosciusko County Fairgrounds.
By sale day, the building is packed with good quality, gently-used toys, movies, DVDs and baby equipment.
"We take anything for children except clothes," Pitt said. "Last year we had more than 6,000 items. We also take in coats, hats, mittens and scarves, which are given away."
Sellers receive 60 percent of the garage sale-priced items. Drop off dates are next week, Dec. 5-8 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. or Dec. 9 from 9 a.m. to noon.
Volunteers price, make detailed lists and play with the toys to make sure they're in good working order.
"We sell a lot, there are very few items left over," Pitt said.
Pitt said the sale is a great way to provide toys at Christmas and she hopes buyers come out in droves.
"A lot of people have the misunderstanding that needy people buy toys during the sale. The sale is for people who want good quality toys."
Money from the sale is used to buy new toys, which are then distributed to underprivileged Kosciusko County families Dec. 13-14.
