Town tells residents not to burn

Posted

MILFORD - With the dry weather, the Milford Town Council said Monday that Milford residents should not burn leaves or other debris.

In October, November and April, Milford typically allows residents to burn leaves and yard waste, clerk-treasurer Charlotte Siegfried said. However, since the town picks up yard waste, there really is no reason residents should burn. Also, the fire department is recommending residents not burn anything because of the dry weather, she said.

Utilities superintendent Dallas Winchester said the leaf season is near and leaves should be boxed or bagged for pickup. The street department will pick them up at the beginning of each week. He asked that people rake their leaves to the front of the tree lawn, not to the road. Leaves will not be picked up in any alleys.

"Everything needs to be curbside or roadside," he said. Leaves should be separate from yard waste and tree limbs.

Fall cleanup is Sept. 26-27, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sept. 28 from 8 a.m. to noon, Winchester reported. All items should be taken to 600 N. Main St. for disposal. No items with freon will be taken unless they are purged, and purge tickets are available at the town hall. No paints or thinners will be taken either. Tires and rims will be taken if they are separated.

In other business, the town council:

• Adopted the 2003 budget. There were no remonstrators.

• Approved Phend & Brown's bid of $2,800 for resurfacing South Henry Street after the water main project on the street is complete.

• Approved for Winchester to hire a special needs student through Wawasee School Corp.'s Special Needs Vocational Training Program if Winchester decides to hire him after an interview. The 18-year-old boy will be paid minimum wage and will work up to three periods a day, up to five days a week. The money will be paid out of the motor vehicle highway budget's overtime pay account.

• Approved to change their October and November meeting dates because of holidays from the second Monday of each month to the first Monday of those two months. The meeting dates and times will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 7 and Nov. 4.

• Heard the EMS had 28 calls in August.

• Approved for town marshal Dave Hobbs to spend $5,395.75 for radios.

All members of the Milford Town Council were present for the regular meeting and include Douglas Ruch, president John Lehman and Robert Phillips.
