Staff Report-
The final event for the community book read sponsored by Kosciusko Literacy Services and the Kosciusko County Community Foundation is a tour of the Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site in Rome City. The Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site was Porter’s second home as an adult. The vast, undeveloped forest provided rich material for her nature studies, writings and photography. Porter cultivated the wildflower gardens using plants native to Indiana. The gardens, arbor, orchard and many scenic paths remain intact. The site currently encompasses 125 acres of land, 20 of which were part of Porter’s original property. “The Cabin in Wildflower Woods,” designed by Porter and built in 1913, is a two-story cabin constructed with Wisconsin cedar logs. Local wild cherry panels the entrance hall and dining room. The home features three distinct fireplaces constructed of varying materials: polished English brick, Indiana artifacts and stones and puddin’ stone.
