Lakeland Christian Academy has announced its top graduating seniors for the class of 1997.
Jessica Mikel, the daughter of Joseph and Marcia Mikel of Etna Green, was named the valedictorian with a GPA of 96.812.
Mikel received the President's Education Award, the LCA Silver and Gold Merit Awards, the LCA Merit Pin for Christian Character and Citizenship, and the Daniel Award for Spiritual Boldness. She has been named to "Who's Who Among American High School Students."
She was a cheerleader, played on the volleyball and softball teams, and was a homecoming representative. She attends Pilgrim's Rest Primitive Baptist Church in Etna Green.
Mikel has received the Selma McKrill Brown Scholarship and the President's Scholarship at Cornerstone College, where she plans to attend.
LCA has named Heidi Retzer and David McCall as co-salutatorians.
Retzer, the daughter of Marvin and Denise Retzer of Winona Lake, is graduating with a GPA of 96.169. She received the President's Education Award, the Daniel Award, the National Choral Award, the Xerox Award for Humanities and Social Sciences, and the ACSI Distinguished Christian Student Award. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has been named to "Who's Who Among American High School Students."
Retzer served as a class officer and student council officer; was a member of the band, choir and Ensemble; and played basketball and volleyball. She attends Community Grace Brethren Church in Warsaw.
She has received the Dean's Scholarship to Gordon College, where she plans to major in English literature and history.
McCall, the son of Larry and Gladine McCall of Winona Lake, will graduate with a GPA of 95.890. He received the President's Education Award and the David Award for Spiritual Awareness. He placed in the local Optimist International Essay Contest and the Optimist International Speech Contest.
McCall was a member of the Ensemble, was selected as a homecoming representative, and has played soccer and basketball. He attends Christ's Covenant Church.
He has received the Presidential Merit Award, the Selma McKrill Brown Scholarship, the Ulmer-Saxman Scholarship and the Encouragement Scholarship at Grace College, where he plans to major in graphic design.
This year's Timothian Award has been given to Dawn Parry, the daughter of Absalom and Sharon Parry of Winona Lake. This honor is given each year to the graduating senior who best exemplifies the exhortation found in I Timothy 4:12.
Parry has received the Jonathan Award for Kindness, was a homecoming representative, and participated in volleyball and cheerleading. She has been awarded a $500 Kiwanis Scholarship. She attends Winona Lake Free Methodist Church.
Parry plans to attend the International Business College of Fort Wayne.
Lakeland Christian Academy's graduation will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Community Grace Brethren Church.
