Tons of Potatoes Served Saturday To Feed The Hungry

For those in need, the Society of Saint Andrew is donating 42,000 pounds of potatoes Saturday, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., at the REMC parking lot, 523 S. Buffalo St.

Helping serve the 21 tons of spuds for Kosciusko County are 17 local food agencies. These agencies have agreed to take 22,000 pounds of the potatoes to help feed the hungry at various locations in the community.

"We really don't ask any questions. If people come to us and say they're hungry, then we'll give them potatoes," David McCleary, Saint Andrew representative, said. "We're here to help people in need."

Saint Andrews will set up three locations on the REMC parking lot. One will be used for distributing potatoes to the food agencies and two will be used for individual donations. KREMC employees and various Boy Scout groups from the area will be helping in the loading and unloading of the food.

"Not that we don't have a large amount of potatoes, but the numbers we requested are down from previous donations," McCleary said. "The problem this time of year is not that the demand for food is down but that the potatoes spoil quicker."

While Saint Andrews is supplying the potatoes, the Kosciusko County Community Fountain Inc. contributed a $2,500 grant to help with bagging and transportation of the potatoes from Wisconsin. Saint Andrew hopes to supply areas outside of the county as well, including Bourbon, Akron, North Webster and Nappanee.

The society receives three grants a year for the donation of potatoes. Kosciusko County Community Foundation Inc., Operation Roundup and K21 Century Foundation each give $2,500 for the cause.
