Titus Funeral Home, Legion Team Up To Remember VetsTitus Funeral Home, the John C. Peterson Post of the American Legion and the post’s American Legion Auxiliary partnered together to distribute poppies recently.
“May 26 was National Poppy Day and, of course, the 28th was Memorial Day. Veterans, family members and patriotic Americans were encouraged to wear or display a red poppy as a symbol of remembrance and hope,” said funeral director Cory Benz. “Our funeral home proudly supports veterans and we were delighted to partner with the Warsaw American Legion Auxiliary to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and those who continue to answer our nation’s call.”
The funeral home served as a distribution location for poppies, which are traditionally distributed by American Legion and Auxiliary members with the request that those individuals receiving a flower would make a donation. All donations to the American Legion were matched by the Titus staff, who also included a charitable gift.
The red poppy came to symbolize the blood shed by those who fought and those who continue to still fight for the U.S. following World War I. It was popularized by the publication of the wartime poem “In Flanders Fields.” The poem was written by Lt. Col. John McCrae, M.D., while serving on the front line in World War I, to honor soldiers killed in battle. In 1920, the poppy became the official flower of The American Legion family.
