Tippecanoe Audobon Society Announces ‘A Bird In The Hand’ Program

Posted

Each summer, staff and volunteers at Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center of Goshen College arrive before dawn to participate in research about the songbirds living and nesting at Merry Lea.
Join them to learn how and why this research is being done. Though they can’t bring any live birds, you will have the chance to see and handle some of the equipment that is regularly used as well as see many examples of the kinds of birds the Merry Lea team works with.
Carol Good-Elliott, Environmental Educator at Merry Lea since 2001, will lead the program. She delights in helping others discover and notice the wonder in the small, unnoticed beauty around us all the time. In addition to her teaching roles, Good-Elliott has overseen Merry Lea’s bird banding research work since 2016. She has a federal Master Bander permit through the U.S. Geological Survey’s Bird Banding Lab. As Merry Lea’s bander, she supervises undergraduate student interns and a dedicated group of volunteers each summer.
Join Tippecanoe Audubon Society’s winter program “A Bird in the Hand: Bird Banding Research at Merry Lea,” on Tuesday, Feb. 10 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Peabody Public Library, 1160 IN-205, Columbia City. The community is encouraged to attend.
Participation is free and open to anyone interested in birding and conservation. There is no need to register.
