MANCHESTER, Ind. — The difference between extending a season and ending it can be measured by only a handful of points.
At Saturday's IHSAA Manchester Regional, both Warsaw cross country teams delivered performances worthy of a State Finals berth. The girls missed advancing by just five points. The boys fell only seven points short. Yet amid the disappointment, the Tigers proved they belonged among the region's elite and will still be represented at Indiana's biggest stage by three outstanding individual qualifiers.
Sophomores Dani Rastrelli and Cecilia Scheetz-Holland qualified for the State Finals on the girls’ side, while senior Jaxon Lehman earned a trip to Terre Haute for the boys. Together, the trio will carry Warsaw's season forward onto Indiana's biggest cross country stage.
Lady Tigers Save Their Best for Last
The Warsaw girls produced what was arguably their finest race of the year.
On a foggy morning at Manchester, every member of the varsity lineup recorded a personal-best performance. Despite the remarkable achievement, Warsaw finished sixth in the team standings, only five points behind Bishop Dwenger for the fifth and final qualifying spot.
Leading the Tigers was sophomore Dani Rastrelli, who continued her remarkable season by finishing 16th overall in a personal-best 18:40.77, securing her place at the State Finals. Sophomore Cecilia Scheetz-Holland delivered one of the most impressive performances of the day. She shattered her previous personal best by an astonishing 1 minute, 6 seconds, crossing the finish line in 18:58.33 to place 21st overall and earn her first trip to the state meet. Behind the two state qualifiers, Warsaw continued to pile up personal records. Matilda Granger crossed the line in 19:27.08 to place 36th. Isadora Vega trimmed 54 seconds from her previous best while finishing in 19:51.57. Savannah Purdy rounded out the scoring five with a personal-best 20:01.24. The streak continued with Eden Gackenheimer finishing in 20:17.97 and Kyla Transparenti running 21:02.70, completing a rare seven-for-seven day of personal records. "We knew it was going to be a hard-fought battle for the places to advance, and we gave it everything we could," said coach Jason Flemming. "We preached getting out and holding all week, and these ladies did just that. We are so proud of how they worked as a team to push to the limit." Assistant coach Nate Howett captured the feeling surrounding the performance in a simple statement: "We saved our best race for today. Never underestimate the Lady Tigers in October." The standings may show a sixth-place finish, but they do not fully tell the story. Seven runners. Seven personal records. Two state qualifiers. The Lady Tigers could not have executed much better.
Boys Run Their Way Into Contention
The Warsaw boys delivered an equally impressive performance. The Tigers finished sixth with 212 points, narrowly missing a team state berth by seven points while producing one of their strongest races of the season. Pack running had been a point of emphasis all year, and Warsaw executed it nearly perfectly. The Tigers' top five averaged 16:49.79, with all five scorers finishing within 31 seconds and 33 places of one another. Lehman led the way in 16:34, placing 31st overall and earning an individual spot at the State Finals. Sophomore Luke Vander Bie followed closely in 16:41, while senior Nolan Stump ran a personal-best 16:45. Sophomore Eli Swinehart added a 16:58, and junior Keenan Lyions completed the scoring lineup in 17:05. Freshman Brady Dewey finished in 17:15, while senior Jack Boggs crossed in 17:22. "If you would have told me before the meet that our top five would average 16:49 and we'd put all seven of our runners ahead of Bishop Dwenger's fifth runner, I would have bet that would be enough to get the job done," coach Matt Campbell said. "Having five guys run 17:05 or faster is a darn good day."
"Our guys went out and exceeded expectations," Campbell said. "That's what makes this one tough. We ran better than what we had projected as a solid day, and it still wasn't quite enough."
A Season Worth Celebrating
The final scoreboards showed Warsaw just one position away from extending both team seasons. Five points separated the girls from a state berth. Seven points separated the boys. Yet when viewed as a whole, Saturday's regional showcased the strength of Warsaw's cross country program. The girls produced personal-best performances across the entire varsity lineup and qualified two sophomores for the State Finals. The boys exceeded expectations, came within seven points of advancing as a team, and will return a core group of their varsity roster in 2027. Most importantly, Warsaw's season is not over. Next Saturday, Rastrelli, Scheetz-Holland, and Lehman will represent the Tigers at the IHSAA State Finals in Terre Haute. While both teams came agonizingly close to advancing together, their performances at Manchester demonstrated the qualities that define championship programs: preparation, resilience, belief, and the willingness to compete fearlessly when the stakes are highest. The team season may have ended, but for three Tigers, the biggest race of the year is still ahead.
