Farmers looking for a way to give back this harvest season have another option close to home.
The Kosciusko County Community Foundation announced Ag Plus Inc. has joined the list of grain elevators that accepts gifts of grain on behalf of the Community Foundation.
For farmers, giving grain can be a meaningful way to make their charitable giving more tax beneficial, according to a news release from the Community Foundation. Rather than selling grain and then donating the proceeds, a farmer may be able to donate the grain directly to the Community Foundation, the Community Foundation sells the grain, and the proceeds directed to a charitable fund chosen by the farmer. Depending on individual circumstances, this may reduce a farmer’s taxable income associated with the sale of the grain. Because every farm and tax situation is different, the Community Foundation encourages farmers to talk with their tax advisor to determine whether a gift of grain is right for them.
Gifts of grain can provide support to any charitable fund at the Community Foundation, including a new fund. Donating grain to the Community Foundation to create a family fund, support a favorite nonprofit or strengthen local charitable causes is a simple way for farmers to make a lasting difference, the release states.
Other area elevators that have accepted gifts of grain for the Community Foundation for many years include CereServ, Clunette Elevator and Deatsman Grain Farms, all of Leesburg; Louis Dreyfus, Claypool; and Mentone Grain & Feed, Mentone.
