The Animals To Headline Classic Rock Concert

Posted

Eric Burdon and The Animals will be the headline act for the June 17 Classic Rock Concert.

Parks department activities director Janelle Wilson presented a $6,250 (down payment) contract for the group to appear at Friday's Warsaw Board of Works meeting.

The total contract cost is $12,500 with the remainder to be paid at a later date.

The Classic Rock Series is part of the park's Friday night concert series. The events are held in Central Park during the summer. Admission is free.

Wastewater utility superintendent Dave Henderson was next to address the works board.

He explained that, "the final clarifiers at the old plant need refurbished," as the board approved $15,600 in labor charges. They also expect to see an invoice for upwards of $36,000 for the "parts."

What has worn out are the bearings, chains and "flights" or boards that pull settled sludge to one end of tank to be pumped out and put back in the aeration basin.

"Its the heart and soul of the final clarifiers there," Henderson said after the meeting. "Otherwise the sludge settles out and fills in the tank."

The boards travel back and forth across the tank in a continuous circuit. M.K. Betts Engineering of Anderson will provide the labor to replace the bearings for the gears that drive the chain system. While they're at it, the chains and boards will be replaced, too.

The work should take a day or two, Henderson said.

"We knew at some point it would have to be repaired. It has been been a problem with one drive in particular."

The expected repairs have been budgeted.

The board also:

• Approved a maintenance contract with Sands Office Equipment in the amount of $969 as requested by the building and planning department.

• Approved a contract with Lawrence Clifford of South Bend to serve as the code hearing officer was approved in the amount of $5,400.

• Approved a release of lien at 1832 Sue Ave.

• Approved an application to the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County for a maximum of $6,000 to cover expenses incurred for summer concert events in the park, as requested by parks activities director Janelle Wilson.

Wilson also received permission to apply for a grant from the Kosciusko Convention and Visitors Bureau Tourism Promotion Fund to support advertising the Classic Rock Concert.

• Approved contracts with the Lake Area Community Band for $450 to appear July 22 in Central Park Plaza and with Kevin Roberts Entertainment Agency for $1,250 as booking agent for the Classic Rock Concert.

• Approved the purchase of a 110 John Deere Tractor, loader, backhoe, auger unit at a cost of $32,449 from Gilsingers in Leesburg as requested by Oakwood Cemetery sexton David Shaw.

• Approved a request by public works superintendent Lacy Francis Jr. to receive quotes and purchase a front-loading vehicle.

• Approved a contract with Arab Termite and Pest Control in the amount of $528 for pest control services at both fire stations "issues with ants and, periodically, mice" have been addressed according to fire chief Matt Warren.

Board of works members are Mayor Ernie Wiggins, Jerry Patterson and Charlie Smith.
