Tent City Set At Courthouse To Raise Awareness About Homelessness

Posted
The community will have the opportunity to sleep in tents on the Kosciusko County Courthouse lawn to experience homelessness for a night.

The Greater Warsaw Ministerial Association and New Life Christian Church will have a "Tent City" in Warsaw to raise awareness about homelessness.

The event will be Thursday beginning at 7 p.m.Pastor John Lowe, association board member and New Life Christian church pastor, is encouraging the public to join the city to remind people there are people in Kosciusko County who are homeless.

"Some people in Kosciusko County who are homeless live in their vehicle, or a tent, or any place they can find," Lowe said during a telephone interview Friday afternoon.

People are encouraged to pitch tents on the courthouse lawn or sleep in boxes. Participants are allowed to bring food and beverages, but can fast and pray if they choose.

"When people are homeless their main goal is to survive and try to get through the day and night," Lowe said.

Lowe said he plans on participating in the event, and there has been interest from association and church members.

New Life Christian Church provided shelter at the church in cooperation with the Salvation Army last winter. They provided 472 nights of stay in a four-month period.

This year, the shelter is being developed at The Salvation Army with the support of the association and church.

Donations for Project Refuge may be sent with checks payable to GWMA, PO Box 1797, Warsaw, IN 46581 or by dropping it off at the "Tent City."
