SYRACUSE - An 18-year-old Warsaw man is dead after an industrial accident Thursday in Syracuse.
According to Kosciusko County Coroner Larry Ladd, Matthew D. Brown, 18, of 703 Southside Drive, Warsaw, was driving a forklift at Sweetlix LLC, Syracuse, when the vehicle turned over as Brown rounded a corner in the forklift. The forklift then fell on Brown, crushing him. It is undetermined whether Brown had fallen out of the forklift or if he attempted to jump out of it. Coworkers found Brown and called 911 shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday.
Brown was pronounced dead at the scene from the injuries.
Ladd said it was his understanding that Brown was only employed at Sweetlix for about six to eight weeks.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration were called Thursday and were on the scene Friday investigating, along with the Syracuse Police Department and company officials.
The accident remains under investigation, Ladd said Friday night.
Brown's obituary appears on page 3A of today's Times-Union.
