The advantages and disadvantages of establishing a fire protection district, or a fire territory, were discussed at a local government meeting Thursday.
Paige Gregory, of Umbaugh & Associates, was invited by meeting organizer Retha Hicks, Winona Lake town clerk, to talk about these entities. With caps on many tax levies and unfunded mandates ordered by the state, local governments are cutting back or curtailing services in some areas.
Establishment of a fire protection district or territory would spread the taxes over a larger base. All taxpayers would be taxed equally for fire services.
Gregory said in some areas, a town will shoulder the majority of fire protection services and a township may pay very little while receiving the same services.
