SYRACUSE - If a carrier can be found, members of the Syracuse-Wawasee Chamber of Commerce soon may be able to purchase group insurance. Working in coalition with chambers in Kosciusko, Elkhart and St. Joseph counties, the local board hopes to make group insurance a reality, according to a discussion at Thursday's meeting.

Saturday the chamber will host a luncheon business briefing beginning at 11:30 a.m. in Oakwood Inn. Sponsored by Oakwood and held in conjunction with the Rotary Club, the event will feature Indiana Chamber Vision 2001 presentations, which will review the legislative session and provide a scorecard on how business fared.

Speakers include Jerry Malooley, director of health care and human resources; George Raymond, director of labor relations/safety; and Mark Lawrence, vice-president corporate development.

June will be a big month for chamber activities, beginning with the June 15 Power of Creative Thinking Seminar, followed by the annual golf outing June 20 and ending with a June 30 chicken barbecue at Lakeland Youth Center. In between the chamber will be selling all kinds of flags.

Dave Wilson will lead the seminar using storyboarding, the creative thinking system used by Walt Disney and Leonardo da Vinci. Cost is $149 per person, or $129 for chamber members.

The Million Dollar Golf Scramble will be held June 20 at South Shore Golf Club with four-person teams playing best ball. Side contests will allow players to vie for prizes including a chance to putt for $25,000. Teams can register for $200, or players can register for $50 per person.

The chamber will fly the flags of all 50 states on the utility poles along Ind. 13 to observe Flag Day June 14. Prior to that the poles will be decorated with flags purchased by families to commemorate a high school or college graduation.

Steven Hite, chamber director, is working with Syracuse Parks Superintendent Michael Hixenbaugh on a town beautification project. In the very early stages, the two hope to form a group that will work to develop a citywide theme including use of a particular flower and tree throughout the area.

"We hope to expand the summer season with a splash of spring flowers," said Hite.

Other chamber activities include sponsorship of Sidewalk Days and Garage Sale days Aug. 9 - 11, and the sale of amusement park tickets at a savings of $9 - $15 per ticket for such parks as Cedar Point, Kings Island and Great America, among others.
