As a cosponsor of the "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive by the National Association of Letter Carriers, United Way of Kosciusko County salutes their efforts as local supermarkets and businesses become participants of the food drive.
Marsh and Owen's supermarkets of Warsaw have agreed to place food bins near their exits so customers can donate nonperishable items. Donations such as canned goods, cereal and rice will be accepted from May 1-7. Food bins will allow community members to pick up a few extra items and donate them every time they grocery shop throughout the entire week.
Curves for Women has agreed to run a special discount for any new members joining between May 1-7. Anyone who brings a bag of nonperishable food items will save $100 on the registration fee. Curves also will be running a gift certificate raffle for current members who bring in 3 cans of food.
On May 8, local letter carriers will participate in the annual food drive. Communities across the nation will also participate.
(A story submitted to the Times-Union and published Thursday incorrectly listed the date as May 10.)
Last year, approximately 12 tons of food were distributed to local food pantries including The Salvation Army, Combined Community Services, Mary & Jerry's Helping Hands and Our Father's House. The 12 tons provide approximately three months food for the families in need, in our community.
This year the goal is to collect 15 tons of nonperishable food to distribute to the local food pantries.
With the additional support of local supermarkets and Curves, the food drive committee is hoping to start this year's food drive with a jump-start of already donated items.
United Way of Kosciusko County is proud to be a part of the effort to alleviate hunger in our community and asks that you join the millions across the nation to help "Stamp Out Hunger."
