Student-Made Banners to Advertise Wagon Wheel Christmas Show

Posted
Next week, banners for “A Christmas Story, the musical” will hang around downtown Warsaw and at the Wagon Wheel Center for the Arts and Wyndham Gardens.
The artists are the student winners of the Banner Art Awards, sponsored by the Warsaw Rotary Club.
Wagon Wheel Center for the Arts Executive Director Will Dawson said Warsaw Community Schools students taking art classes were involved in the contest. Art teachers gave the students 8-inch by 14-inch paper to draw a poster for Wagon Wheel’s holiday musical, “A Christmas Story.” Students could interpret that however they wanted, but had to include the title and dates of the show.
Art teachers then submitted their top three choices to the Rotary Club, who judged the posters. The top three finalists for each school were invited to the Wagon Wheel Thursday night for the Banner Art Awards ceremony, where the top winner from each school was announced. Each student’s banner also was unveiled for students and their families.
At the end of the year, each of the 12 winners will get to keep their banner. While the eight elementaries and two middle schools had only one winner per school, the high school had two winners.
Every banner finalist received a certificate and bag of candy. Besides having their banner hung up around town, the first-place winner from each school also received two tickets to a Wagon Wheel show. Elementary students received tickets to “Bye Bye Birdie,” middle school students will see “West Side Story” and high school students will get tickets to “A Christmas Story.”
This is the third banner contest. The first contest was for the 2013 holiday show, “The Sound of Music,” and the second contest for select shows of the 2014 summer season.
