Repeating his victory from last year, Nick Walmer won best solo performance at the Warsaw Community High School Battle of the Bands Thursday night.

Strumtrulescent, a band performing together for only two months, won the Battle of the Bands itself.

The seventh annual band contest at Lakeview Middle School auditorium featured eight high school bands performing everything from The Beatles and The Rolling Stones to Marilyn Manson, as well as songs some bands wrote themselves.

Members of Strumtrulescent are Nate Wilson on bass and drums, Caleb Vogel on keyboard and piano, Clarke Joyner singing and drums, and Hannah Bailey singing and guitar. Vogel said the band name was something the four of them came up with together. They play jazz and covers and change them around, said Joyner. Their version of "Twist and Shout" had everyone at the Battle of the Bands up on their feet.

Strumtrulescent won the $500 first place with 146 votes. The Resolutes won the second place $200 with 104 votes.

Walmer sang and played guitar in two of the competing bands, The Resolutes and The Royal Nonesuch. While The Resolutes played "indie" music that effectively sounded like a cross between The Cure and Disturbed, The Royal Nonesuch mixed it up with The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Walmer has played with the members of The Royal Nonesuch since eighth grade. The Resolutes have played together for five to six months. Walmer said he's been playing the electric guitar for four years.

For winning best solo, Walmer received $100, half of which was donated by Maple Leaf Grille.

The other competing bands included El Shek and the 24s, Pluto's Ladder, Shades of Black, Paraplegic Millipedes and Father?
