If it looks like the Warsaw Street Department is redoing some curbs and leaving others out in the Shady Crest subdivision project, there is a reason why.
All the residences in the area were on septic tanks and the city is putting in a new sanitary interceptor, according to Lacy Francis of the street department. The interceptor will run to CR 350S.
Construction started in June and is getting close to being done, according to Mayor Ernie Wiggins.
"We do appreciate people's patience out there," said Wiggins.
Francis said the only curbs being replaced in that area are the ones that are broken up or damaged in the construction. To redo all the curbs would be going beyond what the contract calls for.
According to Wiggins, the city did not plan to replace the curbs. The intent of the project was to run a sewer line through the area, not replace the curbs.
Some curbs are being replaced because they are broken and aren't draining water properly anymore. These curbs need to be replaced so they can be covered with asphalt and assure water drainage.
Anything not damaged during construction will not be replaced. "I only have to replace what I have to replace," said Francis. The contract doesn't include enough money to redo all the curbs, and some don't really need to be redone, he said.
The curbs in Shady Crest are called a 6-inch roll curb. These curbs aren't used anymore in the city's new projects. However, the street department is putting the same curbs back in to replace the damaged ones so that everything looks the same.
Included in the project is total re-asphalting all the streets in the subdivision. According to Francis, some streets don't need the overlay but the street department is doing it anyway.
"It's cutting the project cost real close," said Francis.
Francis said the project is operating on a need-to basis.
"There is only so much money to go around," said Wiggins.
"I'd love to be able to have the money to put in new curbs all along the area," Francis said.
However, for this project, he said, it is just not possible.
