State Board of Education gave some schools early Christmas presents Friday and other schools lumps of coal when it announced school grades for 2013. Beginning with the 2010-11 academic year, the State Board of Education changed the labels for school categories based on student performance from the terms Exemplary, Commendable, Academic Progress, Academic Watch and Academic Probation to letter grades (A, B, C, D and F). According to the Indiana Department of Education website, “The A-F labels improve transparency by allowing parents and community members to better recognize how well Indiana schools are performing and leading students to achieve positive academic outcomes.” Starting with the 2011-12 academic year, the State Board of Education adopted the use of a new methodology for determining a school or corporation's grade, A-F. “Indiana's new A-F model holds schools and corporations to higher standards and provides a more accurate picture of their performance by incorporating student academic growth and graduation rates, as well as college and career readiness, as measures of success,” the website states. At Wawasee School Corp., North Webster Elementary School received a “B” for 2013. In 2012, the school received a “C,” and an “A” in 2011 and “C” in 2010. Wawasee Middle School earned an “F” for 2013, down from a “D” in 2012 and 2011, and a “C” in 2010. Milford School earned a “D” in 2013, which was down from a “C” in 2012 and an “A” in 2011 and 2010. Syracuse Elementary also did worse, earning a “D” in 2013, down from a “C” in 2012 and an “A” in 2011 and 2010. Wawasee High School earned another “A” in 2013, which was what it received in 2012. It had a “C” in 2011 and an “F” in 2010. In 2012, Warsaw Community School Corp. earned all “A’s” for the high honor roll. While it didn’t get all “A’s” in 2013, seven of the 11 schools did get A’s, with the other four earning B’s. Claypool Elementary School earned an “A” this year and last year, and a “B” in 2011. The school had been closed until the 2010-11 school year. Eisenhower Elementary has earned an “A” every year, except for 2010 when it got a “B”. Lincoln Elementary and Washington STEM Academy have earned “A’s” every year for the past four years. Harrison Elementary dropped from an “A” in 2012 to a “B” in 2013. It had a “C” in 2011 and a “D” in 2010. Leesburg Elementary earned an “A” in 2012, and got to keep that grade for 2013. It had “C’s” in 2011 and 2010. At Jefferson Elementary, it earned “A’s” in 2013 and 2012, up from a “D” in 2011 and a “C” in 2010. Madison Elementary dropped to a “B” in 2013 from its “A” in 2012. It had a “C” in 2011 and a “D” in 2010. The two Warsaw middle schools, Lakeview and Edgewood, both dropped to “B’s” in 2013 from an “A” in 2012. Both schools earned “D’s” in 2011 and 2010. Warsaw Community High School has maintained its “A” from 2012 for 2013. It had a “C” in 2011 and a “D” in 2010. Grades for Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. were a mixed bag this year, with some schools improving their grades and others falling. Akron Elementary received a “C” in 2012 and again in 2013. It had an “A” in 2011 and a “D” in 2010. Mentone Elementary improved from a “C” in 2012 to a “B” in 2013. It received a “D” in 2011 and a “B” in 2010. Tippecanoe Valley Middle School has went back and forth between a “C” and an “F” over the last four years. It earned the “C” in 2010 and 2012, but the “F” in 2011 and 2013. Meanwhile, Tippecanoe Valley High School increased from an “F” in 2010 to a “D” in 2011, then an “A” in 2012, but dropping slightly to a “B” in 2013. All schools in the Whitko School Corp. improved except South Whitley Elementary School, which stayed the same. Pierceton Elementary dropped from a “C” in 2010 to “D’s” in 2011 and 2012, but improved to an “A” in 2013. South Whitley had an “A” in 2010, but has maintained a “C” every year since then. Whitko Middle School improved to a “B” in 2013 from a “D” in 2012. It had a “B” in 2011 and an “A” in 2010. Whitko High School earned an “A” in 2013, up from “C’s” in 2012 and 2011, and an “F” in 2010. The elementary and high school at Triton School Corp. appear to be on the same path. Both schools earned “C’s” in 2012, but increased those to “A’s” in 2013. In 2011, the junior-senior high school had a “C” while the elementary had a “D.” The junior-senior high school in 2010 had a “D,” while the elementary had a “B” that year. Manchester Community School Corp. has three schools, and each one did something different this year compared to last year. Manchester Junior-Senior High School’s grade in 2013 dropped to a “B” from an “A” in 2012. It had a “C” in 2011 and a “D” in 2010. Manchester Elementary School’s grade in 2013 stayed the same as 2012, an “A.” In 2011, it had a “B,” while it had an “A” in 2010. Manchester Intermediate School’s grade in 2013 increased to a “B” from a “C” in 2012. It had “D’s” in 2011 and 2010.
