South Whitley Town Council Hears Parking Concern, Votes To Line Spots On Maple Street

Posted

SOUTH WHITLEY – At Tuesday night's meeting, the South Whitley Town Council heard a concern from Mary Miller, 205 N. Maple St., regarding the lack of street parking.
Miller said often, especially Sundays, there is nowhere for residents on Maple to park on their own street due to churchgoers and others who park in the area. Miller said she does not have a driveway and lives on an alley, so she parks on the street.
While the town is under no legal obligation to provide reserved spots for residents on public roadways, council discussed the issue and voted 2-0 to delineate the streets with parallel parking lines from the alley at the end of Maple down to Broad Street. Council member Randy Cokl was absent.
Clerk-Treasurer Alyssa Knepple presented three quotes for an HVAC system replacement at the clerk's office, which has no air conditioning. Council approved a $14,285.05 quote with Flow-Tech Plumbing and Heating for the new system.
Council approved the preliminary engineering report and signatory authorization for Council President Brock Waterson for the next Community Crossings Matching Grant (CCMG) project with the Indiana Department of Transportation, presented by Utilities Superintendent Kent Slater.
In other business, council voted to close Slater Drive and Front Street from Slater Drive to the library's parking lot on Friday, July 3 for the town's Party at the Park.
Council also voted to allow the closure of the pickleball courts for the AmVets' cornhole tournament on July 18.
Council will next meet at 6:30 p.m. June 9.
